I have experianced some bad crashes lately...These crashes cause my computer to start in SAFE mode...once I'm in safe mode I CANNOT get out of it, unless I do a System Restore with WIN ME. It's a PAIN.
It happened while I was using Halion. It has also happened when i start my computer with my Soundcard(Tascam 428)turned on. The reason I ask is that Tascam just came out with New drivers...So I don't know if the crash is caused by Halion or the 428.

Also, Before I started my computer since the 428 was on, I also turned on all my outboard gear...Could some midi message have caused the crash?

People have been complaining about Crashes in Halion and the new 428 drivers, How can I tell what's doing it? Or could both of 'em do it?

munkee

Any ideas?

I highly doubt that any of your gear being turned on when you start your computer is going to cause the crash. Windows doesnt see any MIDI data unless a program is on and is told to look for it. There has to be some IO conflict that is happening. First..restart the computer with the 428 off..if no crash then it's the new drivers..possibly. If there is a crash...I would uninstall Halion completely..to do this uninstall the program via the uninstaller that comes with it...if it has that option..if not then add/remove programs is the next step. Afterwards go thru your registry editor and in the find section type in Halion...delete any strings that contain that word! Next go thru the Start menu to the find files and folders and type Halion in there as well..delete any files found! Once that is done restart the machine with the 428 turned OFF!!! see if you have a crash..if not that's good..if so then I'm wondering if your regsitry is corrupt. Sometimes you have to make sure that when you upgrade drivers that none of the existing drivers are present. That can cause issues sometimes. I like to search my entire system for any old files before updating drivers..it's like starting from scratch. go thru your registry and your System/System32 folders and look for any ".dll"'s that contain the device name..
When I tried to upgrade the driver for my 428 it wouldnt do it..I completely redid my system to make sure that no older files were there..Win2k is more of a pain when it comes to registry editing..you have to change the security options to delete any main registry issues. To me starting with a fresh install is my favorite way to make sure my system is top notch. I dont like adding drivers or patches on top of each other. Kind of scares me!
I havent updated to the new 3.03 drivers that Tascam just put out since I am not having any issues at all..only reason I went to 3.0 is because of the cool tuner it has!! Sad isnt it!! lol!
Please let me know how the tests go
Peace
