howdy!
ok...so my friend's dad offered to give me his Shure Vocal master PA setup for free. .i've never heard of these, but i guess it was pretty common back in the old days. (i'm pretty sure it's discontinued). but anyway, i was checkin it out and it seems to be all tube and kinda looks more like an old guitar head than a PA.
what are you guys' opinions on these? i mean i'm guessing that the pre's in it would sound pretty bad-ass compared to the builtin pres in my Fast track Ultra (m-audio Octane)...correct?
i'm just lookin for a nice(r) vocal pre that would add some warmth and color to my vocals. -would this Shure vocal master do the trick?

Down here in GATOR COUNTRY that was a popular PA rig for a LOT of performers. Shoot, Skynyrd used to have a Vocalmaster pushing a pair of E-V Eliminators. BTW, Bob, they also used Fender Twins as their stage monitors!
Anyway, the poor Vocalmaster was pretty advanced for its' time. You could order a version with XLR inputs and low-Z transformers, or a cheaper model with 1/4" inputs. And there were these neat, color-coded rocker switches that kicked in "anti-feedback" circuits that cut the tone and volume of the system in half...WOW!!!
I used one of those with a pair of Altec A-7 Voice of the Theater monstrosities....I ruled the world with that rig!!!
Of course, I've kept it all these years, it makes a great boat anchor when I go fishin'...LOL!!!
P.S.: NO tubes in this baby. all silicone with 100 screamin' watts of RMS power!!!

Wow, that brings back the memories. We had one in one of my first bands in 1971. They weren't the best sounding things in the world if I remember correctly. But better than putting the vocals through a Fender Twin.
It is probably worth trying out to see how the pres sound. I might even go for some new tubes. But don't get your hopes too high. These are not all that uncommon, and if they were great recording pres I assume we'd have heard about it.
