How do I get my bass to sound like this?

I have an Ibanez soundgear run of the mill 4 string bass. I have been listening to this CD from The Flaming Lips called Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. And for the life of me have no idea how to make my bass sound anywhere like this. I'm using Cubase for the EQ and compression and stuff and fairly new to recording the bass. I'm recording it direct and not with an amp.

using a reference CD

best advice for using a reference CD to acclimate my ears to monitors, room acoustics etc(ie, my favourite donnie osmond record or whatever)?. How do i trust the sound source? do i bounce down to a wav or mp3 and import the file into my daw? or will running my CD player as an input be accurate enough. this might be a dumb question but i've always wondered.

Using Roland R8 MKII with MOTU Midi Time Piece AV USB

am trying to utilize my Roland R8 MKII Human Rhythm Composer with my DAW and I have the MIDI out of it connected to my MOTU MIDI Timepiece AV USB. I am getting a constant fluttering red led whenever I have it inserted into the MTP. I tried moving it to various ports but still, the same problem.
