I'm looking to get my first mixing board. I have found two of them that I am very interested in. The Mackie CR1604 vlz and the Soundcraft Spirit M8. I found pretty good deals on both and would love to hear some opinions on them before I purchase. I make electronic music (techno/house/hip hop /etc..).

I'm doing a rewire of my studio and started looking at my available loose jacks and cabling. I've found 20 or so male and female XLR's that I know are very old.. 20 years or so.

I'm just wondering if I'm wrong in thinking that they should work just fine. Of course I'd clean them up with the appropriate cleaner.

I love my Lexicon 80, but I need more reverb channels for real-time recording.

. . I've found these two different used units for the same price $299. I cannot audition them, so I'm wondering what are some of the pluses and minuses, between the two?

How important "if at all" is using a leveler/compressor for recording on to a final CD?
Is there a standard method?

I was trying to lay down some guitar, the tone out of my amp was great. I have tried running the guitar through a pedal straight into the M-Audio interface and also from the amp into it, both times the tone of the guitar sounds really staticky/dirty...especially on higher notes. Does anyone know why this is?

First, is there anywhere on the 'net that I can get stuff like Chesky audiophile files or similar stuff for free? (except illegal sites, of course)

Is there any other good (great) book on mixing/mastering and everything inbetween except Bob Katzs' "The ART and Science..."?

So for the second day in a row, this error message-6088 comes up in the middle of recording! Making me look like a complete ass with anyone I record. Of course this only happened once I updated to 6.7, and the only known fix is to buy some other firewire card that is recommended although other users say it did not help all that much.
