Preamps and Comps

Ive been listening to country music lately, and I must say,I really love the quality of the vocals .
My question is,what preamps, and comps are the high-endstudios using to get that real nice, thick, rich, round,up frt ?

Im in the process of getting rid of a lot of "rack-Crap",and saving my $$$ to get a Preampcompressor, that gives me that tone on Vocals 8-)

2-track reel-to-reel recorders. Teac, Tascam, Otari...

i keep seeing these for sale for under $300 all over the place, and I am wondering if anyone has ever used these for music/rock recording? it is almost tempting to pick one up to track some vocals or snare/kicks on them. but it is a waste of time? or are these valuable elements in a studio? i know the whole debacle on tape companies is uncertain as well...but I'm tempted...

String Quartet in Pop Music

Hallo,

next week I will track a string quartet for a pop recording. So far I'm planning to use a Schoeps ORTF System for the overall ensemble sound and some room information as well as close Micing each player individually with a Schoeps cardiotic mic.
Since I'm more used to classical recording techniques I have the following questions:

Whichsoundcard should I choose?

Hello, I`m a norwegian neewbie, and I currently rely on a emu 404 soundcard.

But I`m considering upgrading to a firewire multitrack.

The two candidates so far is PreSonus firepod and Edirol fa101.

Now I know that the firepod is a better card but, I would be very happy to get a cheap solution, hence the edirol being half the price.
