I recently bought a Mackie spike xd-2 to use with my AKG c1000 condensor mic. Prior to this, I used cool edit and a 30 dollar headset on a generic sound card and got some pretty decent equality out of it. (you can check my site for examples) With a better microphone and the spike i expected to outdo myself a few times over but the tweaking seems to be holding me up.

I have a question that's been bothering me for some time. How come so many studios have racks behind or at 90 degrees from the mixer's perspective. How the heck do they adjust compressors and eq's when reaching down or sideways down below in the rack.Not to mention strange reflections from angled racks.

Does anyone have a view on the quality of this mixer's preamps? It's about 10 years old and no longer manufactured. I got a view over at Cubase.net that Allen & Heath mixers are generally well regarded but nothing specific on the preamps.

I am just looking for people who have had any experience with these units. I am looking to buy the 0300D's and also would like to know peoples views on the above preamps.

Okay folks, here's the situation.

I am new to computer recording. Have a long history of Roland and Tascam all-in-ones. I am completely overwhelmed, but ready to take the plunge into the computer DAW realm...please be gentle.

I'm a new member in your forum and I hope to learn from you.
I like to have my own studio in the future but right noe I can't because I'm still a student so I'll work with the small things.

What advantage do you get from increasing or decreasing the buffers for a DAW's audio engine? I know too much will hog your resources and too little will cause hickups and other unwanted artifacts. Is this an issue with some or all DAW programs? I'm just curious about how some of you handle this delima as well as what's your secret remedy for this?

I have been getting good results but not great results (professional=great results) what is wrong with this mixer? trash it or keep it? are they noisy?, how can i improve the sound quality with external effects (not preamps) to make it sound top notch?
