AKG's

I recently tried an experiment with an older version of the c 414 but not sure which one it was as I was in a student studio here in london and was pleased with the results,it was all black ? not like the new one's but how do they compare when Micing high gain guitar amps compared to say a SM57?

Soundcard 1/4" outs to consumer stereo speakers?

I have some nice Grado headphones for monitoring, but becuase much of my voice-over work will now end up being distributed as streaming Flash audio, I'd like to listen to the mix on cheap consumer desktop computer speakers as well -- the kind of thing that comes bundled with a PC or that you'd pick up at Circuit City or Costco -- that's what most of my audience will have.

from killer guitar tones to killer snare sounds

i've been reading some stuff on how to mix and match and overdub to get a killer guitar tone for the track...

what i really missed in the last session i had was the snare sound that i had in my head.. was looking for a tight, compressed, fat sounding snare, but couldn't get anywhere close to that..

RME card has UNBALANCED inputs only . . . is that a problem?

The PCI interface card I'm looking at buying (the RME Digi96/8 PAD) has only UNBALANCED analog inputs. Almost all the threads I've read here talk about the advantage of going all balanced. Should I drop it from consideration or is the lack of balanced inputs not a problem?

Transport Controls

Does anyone know of a stand alone transport control either USB, Firewire or serial (no pre's or mixer built in) for a reasonable price. I just need it to start and stop recording from my drum kit. Running from the PC to the drums, playing then running back to start and stop recording just isn't working. ANY suggestions would be appreciated I'm getting worn out.

Need help creating theme songs and recording from keyboard

Basically I'm interested in creating good quality theme songs for my doom 3 mod, much like the songs "They Crave" and "Corruptor" as seen at http://www.futurecrew.com/skaven/ and I was wondering if I could get some advice as to how to do so, such as software recommendations, any special techniques, etc.

24 bit and 16 bit confusion

So my question is this

i use either a roland 2480 or Cubase as my main recording environment
SX 2 i should specify.

So should i set my projects up as 44.1/24bit? and then mix down or "dither" (still not sure how or when this works) to 16 bit so i can play on a CD?

the real question is, is there noticeable sound quality improvement?

thanks
