Equipment for a Professional Composition Studio

Hi, my name is Paul. I am electrical engineering student in the latter half of my BS degree, and happen to be a violinist. My girlfriend Erin is now receiving three bachelor degrees in music for composition, theory, and flute performance. She is going to continue her education and get a PHD in comp.

What's wrong with using pre out on amp?

I'm always hearing about subMicing an amp instead of just running the pre from the amp into whatever youre using. What's the disadvantage of using the pre out of the amp instead of a mic Micing the speaker? Unless the speaker and the mic add warmth you're looking for and can't add later, doesn't the pre out give you everything that's going to the speaker anyway?

Question for KURT and others...

You keep recommending the Q10 for its wordclock. I have one and I want new pre's. You also keep recommending the seb pre's. Now the question. The Q10 has four inserts; do you think I would get the full potential of the seb's through the Q10 inserts? Are the converters good enough? I'm thinking of buying the 2000e. I can live with 2 great pre's and 6 average pre's.

Multi track Simlultaneous Recording

I'm thinking about picking up the M-Audio FireWire 310 for my mac.
Just wanted to see if anyone knew what software would work best for recording and mixing. I need something that allows me to record an instrument on one track and voice on a separate track, all at the same time, but I want to mix each one individually.

Heavy electric guitars, need advice.

I've been recording a lot of stuff lately just to get the hang of it. I'm basically building my songs, orchestrating them if you like. I'm gonna re-record everything once everything is finished, good guitar sound is not something I'm after right now. Besides there's lots of advice on the forums just for that. Now I have this little question for you guys.
