Do battery voltages spike near end of life?

During a production, a wireless mic required "0" input gain at the console preamp and still had plenty of signal in the level meter (acting like a line-level input requiring -20dB PAD). Very odd. Then, the batteries died. Once they were changed out of the transmitter, the gain staging went back to normal and (as it should) the mic required input gain on the console to get good levels.

Recording with small amplifier? PLEASE HELP!

Ok, well I was recording guitar tracks today for over 6 hours with a Shure SM57 mic, placed right between the center of the speaker, and the outside edge. I was Micing my Line 6 Spider IV 150W Halfstack, and recording into a Tascam DP-004. The guitar I was using was a Gibson Les Paul Studio. I wondering though...could I get a better sound out of my smaller Line 6 Spider III 75W 1X12 Amp?
