LaChapell Audio 992EG for acoustic guitars

I'm looking at different preamps for recording acoustic guitars. This looks like a serious contender. Has anyone here had the opportunity to try the LaChapell Audio 992EG? Place a couple of Royer ribbons with it and the sound is pristine. I've read this is one kick ass pre. sure looks well made.

What else compares?

Does S/PDIF out have any latency before DAC?

Does S/PDIF out disregard the sample buffer settings of an interface, and only have sample rate latency?
(e.g. 48kHz = 48sample buffer / 44.1kHz = 44.1 sample buffer)

In other words, say you have on-board sound with a S/PDIF out; If you send out a 44.1kHz audio stream to an external DAC, will the only latency be 1ms + External DAC latency?

Could an active bass blow a tube in my Avalon?

Had a session the other night. Plugged the bass into my Avalon 737 with the Avalon set to "Instrument".
Was getting signal thru the Avalon into my board, where I set the trim to appropriate level. Recording went fine over the two hour session.
I only found out later that the bass was an "active" bass with it's own preamp circuitry. Don't know what brand.

Processing Power

Many people say that the most important part of an audio set up (especially the complicated DAW Pro Tools HD) is processing power. Without ample processing power, you will be left only wishing you could use the plugins you bought.

Digi designs solution is processing cards, providing 900 mhz of power each. These cards are damn expensive.

What are some of your solutions?
