Education needed for Audio Jobs

I love recording artists and helping with live sound, but I also love hockey. I'd like to be the one in charge of the music and microphones at a hockey arena or doing sound for film. I've read all the posts about how it's getting really hard to make a living in this industry but would I be right to assume that these occupations would be more easily obtained with a 4-year degree?

Anyone know what program this is. Record button?

I use to go to logic classes at the apple store and the guy who taught the class had a record button plugin and I'm trying to remember what it was. It was just a big button that was on the screen and when you hit record it recorded whatever sounds that were coming out of your computer. So you could sample songs that were streaming and it would save it as an mp3 in a folder.
