noob help. purchasing home daw, need advice...PC or Mac

OK. .I'm going to school this fall for a degree in professional recording arts. However...i also will want to be able to produce my own choons while I'm not in class. All in the electronic music genre. Im going to be using programs and plan on purchasing, Reason 3.0, Ableton live 4, and Native Instruments Reaktor, and Absynth and an M-Audio OZONE or O2.

advice on A/Ds / control surfaces.

I'm looking at reasonably priced control surfaces/ A/Ds. I'm liking the US-428, mostly for price. Is it gunna crap out on me or sound bad? is it decent enough? I need something for a broad range of work. Everything from video to theater sound design to studio recording. Worth the money? Also, how worth it would it be to splurge on moving faders, or is that overboard?

need advice on where to start

My father produced a few records in the 50's and 60's. I would like to re-issue them in CD form. The master tapes are very old and I have no way of playing them to see what is useable. I also have LP's and 45's, new to fair condition, maybe a master LP or two as well. The formats are Latin, Jazz, and Doo-Wop for the music; what type of mixing/remastering should I be considering?
