API pres - 3124 and knock offs

I'm in the market for some APIs, I've heard the 3124s while working remote truck gigs - and I've still yet to hear sounds that big and that close to what I prefer.

mainly directed to our moderator..

1) are there different API preamp flavors on the market - some that are no longer made, I'm not in the know on this.

Boost eq with Neve API Helios? Cut eq with Focusrite?

Just been using a Neve 1073 pair recently, I find, like on my Helios eq that boost seems to be the thing I go for instictivly..

I have heard that the same goes for the API range, twist in a boost and BAFF! Cool kick, snare & gtr sounds

Using a Foucusrite 215 however, leads me to cut frequencies.. (vocal 'honk' kick 'crok')

Why is this?

API 212, Brent Averill / API 312, API 512 ?

Has anyone ever done a comparison between API's two preamp modules, the 212 and 512? And we might as well throw in Brent's version of the 312. I like the idea of a simple, straightforward preamp like the 212, without extras like multiple I/O, etc., and its also a couple of hundred cheaper than the 512. The big downside is that it doesn't fit in my 500 series rack empty slots.
