mastering live taping?

Hi there,
I did a live taping of a JOhn Mayer concert (he permits taping) using a minidisc and stereo mic. I would live to dump it on my Pc and have a shot at making it sound better. Currently it sounds quite boomy in the bottom end (b/c of teh subsin the FOH) and alittle distant. Can you suggest some way of making the recording sound :
1. more upfront

API or other compressors

I'm looking for a stereo(dual mono, not just for the mix bus) comp at the moment .For some reason I don't click on the Manley vari-mu that I just tried.I love the fairman TMC but too xpensive. The pendulum is not distributed over here.I like the 33609 but I don't know if the new models sound like the original(Fletcher says no on another thread/forum).I just saw the API 2500 .Does anyone know it?H

API Mic Pre's

I am looking into purchasing some API 312's. I am looking at the vintage pre's with the original 2520 op amp and also the new 3124p with the new surface mount technology 2520 op amp. I understand there is a difference in sound between the two. Has anyone a/b'd these? If so what were your findings? How is the top end? Does one have more punch than the other?

The sound of API

I'm looking to buy some channel strips to add some color to sources tracked into my digital system. I'll be tracking some synths and occasionally some live stuff... My question is how does something like the API 7600 channel strip compare sonically to something like an AMEK Pure Channel, or maybe one of the Neve modules.
