Lots of people do enjoy URS compressors, some prefer to go MC DSP, REN Comp or Sony.

Which is your first choice regarding a plugin compressor?

I myself use mostly Compressor banks and the LA-2A emulation. (color).

What is the cleanest software compressor plugin ? There was a positive review of the PSP Mastercomp in a recent TapeOp which appears to be clean enough for mastering.

Are there any software compressors that are transparent?

Mastering dogma states, I understand, that multiple compressors with smaller amounts of attenuation will provide a more natural result than fewer compressors with a higher attenuation.

In ordering compressor units, then, what set of principles do you apply?

I have a dbx 266XL Compressor. I found out that the transformer died. Does anyone know if I can get a replacement at a electronics store, or do I need to get one from dbx?

The transformer model reads:
Billion

E2-41BTF--SS1-0057

I could find no company on the net named "Billion" that makes transformers.

I read the specs, found it to be exactly what I am looking for. I need a preamp that is better than the one on my 828 MKII anyhow, and have been lusting after a hardware compressor for some time.

I think I am quite sure to buy the Gefell M930 microphone and the Great River MP-2NV Pre 2 channel. Last remaining choice will be the condensor.

Bear in mind when responding that I will have 2 vocal mics (the Gefell above and the NT2000) and the pre and separate compressor will be used dually for vocals and guitar/bass (thanks to the hi-Z on the pre).
