Tortoise drum sounds

not sure if anyone else out there listens to tortoise but i was wondering how these guys get there drum sounds (amazing stuff!). some of the stuff is real drums but sounds almost electronic. they record at John McEntire's (one of the members of tortoise) Soma Studios in Chicago.

dont expect too many replies here but if any1 out there has any ideas...

Checking phase on drum mics

I've heard repeatedly that one must check the phase of drum mics in relation to one another to find phasing problems. How does one go about doing this? I've heard things about using a "phase clicker" but I don't know what that is. Is it a procedure that one would perform which could be done with the phase meter on the console; or do you need to have a phase clicker or do you need both?

Drum Micing Questions

I have a really basic question (even though I'm sure that the answers probably won't be!)...I've always heard that there are so many different ways to record a good set. Is there any particular technique that you should use over any other? The Shure Kit I have (with the SM57's) seems to be able to handle it...

ANY ideas or suggestions would be great! Thanks!
