Description

An expression of the opposition that an electronic component, circuit or system offers to AC or DC current. Impedance contains both resistive and reactive components, although generally only the resistive part of the circuit is usually quote in specifications as Ohms. So the higher the resistance, the higher the impedance.

Headphone Impedance

I'm looking at the AKG 240, Sennheiser 280, and koss pro4aa headphones. Most of the studio people that I know have experience with the AKG and like them, but say that they are quiet and should have a headphone amp pushing them. They were saying that it has a high impedance (I think). From what the specs say, it's 55 ohms. The Sennheiser is 64 ohms and the koss is 250 ohms.

Guitar Impedance Loading/Buffering etc for Pedalboards

I had a most disturbing revelation today. My guitar tone sounded kind of wooly and lacked the dynamics that it used to, so I thought to myself "new strings"? But.. just to be safe, I tried unplugging from my pedalboard and straight into the amp. Lo and behold, the sound was brighter, LOUDER, and had a much greater dynamic range. I'm trying to figure out why this is...

A question about variable input impedance

Submitted by anonymous on Tue, 04/26/2005 - 00:05

Hey everyone, I have a question:

From my understanding, you should set a preamp's input impedance to 10 times the amount of a mics output impedance. Is this correct? And, if I decide to try a different input impedance on the pre, could it cause damage to the mic or preamp?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Cable connector impedance properties, please clarify

Submitted by anonymous on Sun, 03/27/2005 - 23:11

When do I need to be concerned about impedance mis-matching when dealing with XLR <-> 1/4 connectors on the same cable?

For example, do impedeance mis-matches only occur with XLR(bal.) <-> TS(unbal.) ends as opposed to XLR(bal.) <-> TRS(bal.) ends?

Please clarify and reinforce this concept for me for me, it would be MUCH appreciated.
