I have agreed to set a full recording system for my children (Jazz, Classical and some pop/rock Music) but I need some help and comments in trying to determine the best approach and equipment.

I was for years into music recording (Neve, Cadac, SSL.. ) before moving into television so I am not quite up-to-date on all options available today.

My band is using the ddx3216 for our live sound. The thing that we are having trouble with is getting signals (with processing) to our monitors.

I finally figured out live, crisp monitoring with my crappy Soundmax Integrated Digital Card (optic out).

Kristal with ASIO4ALL driver and Adobe Audtion 1.5.

Input - Plain ol' USB Mic with no driver (default WDM driver)
Output - Roland's DM-20 Digital monitors (optic in/out)

I was wondering if any one can tell me if achieving a 48 track recording rig is possible with a laptop. I have seen many 24 track rigs but not a lot bigger. Iam open to any suggesttions I currently use DP 4.6 on a Mac 1.6 g4 powerbook with RME Fireface.

I've read p on this software alot. And I'm just a little bit confused at some thing here. Is a sequencer the same thing as a multitrack recorder? And does Ableton Live make Hip Hop/Rap beats? Basically I'm looking for a general overview of LIVE 5.

First-timer here.

I'm recording a friends jazz band this week as a non-paying favor...basically they are looking for a live demo in a wine bar, so this is really limiting the setup. The band is:
