Is there a "significant" difference in sound quality between a bottom of the line mic preamp(ART tube opl-$100) vs. something like a $300-500 range preamp?

On another forum there has been an interesting, but not very conclusive, discussion regarding cable quality, how different cables influence sound, reliability, monster pricing, etc, etc. I'm considering upgrading my cabling (the entire studio has a mixture of Hosa, Proco, a few Mogamis, but most of it is the cheaper stuff like Hosa).

It's hard for me to believe that for getting so much for so little, that this unit would have high quality Converters and Pres. But we are heading to 2004 in such a brave new world :)

I was wondering how the 8 channel JML preamp standes up to other pres like API's John hardy's and Great River 's. and are they a big step up from the sytek pre's?

Anyone got any tips on getting CD quality sound onto my CD's...when I play back the music on Pro Tools it sounds great, but by the time I convert it from WAV to MP3 and burn it onto the CD it sounds really low and muffled... Thanks.

What do you think of the 2480 vs Mackie,Tascam,Yamaha etc. regarding the sound quality ( please reference the 2480 not older Roland units they upgraded thier front end on the 2480)

I was wondering if anyone here could explain to me, (and give technical reasons) why certain recording programs may sound better than others?

I'm just speaking of the program itself, for example, Nuendo, Cubase, Cool edit pro, N-track, and down the line.

I searched on this but couldn't find it. Hope this isn't a rehash.

How does one measure a plugin 's quality? If the hardware equivalent is digital does it really matter? With hardware FX ADDA conversions doesn't that just add to the problem?

Hi.. have a nice PowerBook (it's loaded) that I'd like to use to record live DJ sets (from the mixer).. I'm aware of all the expensive solutions (Logic Plat 6), but wanted to solicit the insight of this forum before spending the cash. I'd like to steer clear of known issues and limitations, as well as be apprised of cheaper but "just as good" solutions.
