How long do manufacturers generally wait to release an driver for a new OS? I have a Tascam FW1884 which doesn't have drivers for Vista yet. How long does a company like this usually take to get drivers out for a piece of hardware 3 yrs old..?

Tascam Foot Dragging

Since I've had the approved release candidate for vista for some time (through MSDN), and have a 64-bit motherboard that doesn't work with XP-64 but will with Vista, I've been very aggressive in trying to get these drivers.

The drivers are actually produced by Frontier, which licensed some of their technology to Tascam. When I last talked with Frontier (late Dec, 2006), Tascam hadn't even given them the contract to develop the drivers yet.

Tascam's position is since it hasn't been officially released, its not a problem. We like Tascam's products and have a lot of them around here, but their foot dragging on new drivers is shortsighted, since a lot of us are running systems with lots of memory-hungry virtual synths and we're already at the wall with the 3 GB limit.

Its not like there's some question whether or not Vista will be released, or that a lot of us will adopt it ASAP. Now that Vista is officially official, perhaps Tascam has or will soon issue the contract for the driver to be produced.

I'm running EWQLSO and Symphonic Choirs under Sonar 6, and I'm spending more time arranging memory than music.

I don't own the fw-1884, but I do own its little brother, the FW-1082.

Apart from an apparently loud final gain stage (there is a lot of white noise), I really like it.

I emailed TASCAM concerning drivers for Vista, this is what they had to say:
--------------------------
Dear Customer,

Windows Vista dirvers are currently in developement. We do not have an ETA at this time, but they will be released soon.

Thank you for your interest in TASCAM products.

Hi, I would like to know when your company plans on releasing Windows
Vista 32-bit drivers for the FW-1082.

Thanks

I would expect that the drivers for both the FW-1082 and the FW-1884 are very similar. Therefore, this may be good news for 1884 owners, that is of course if TASCAM is not exaggerating the truth...

If your Tascam is working fine with XP, why would you even worry about Vista driver's yet. Besides, the OS has only been out for a few weeks.

I never jump on the lastest and greatest, let everbody else have all the headaches.

That's why I don't have problems with my Daw's. I use what I know will work and that has been tested to work at it's fullest. Hell, XP was out for two years and I was still using 98SE. I skipped 2000 all together.

Vista........maybe one day,YMMV

Peace............Scoobie
