Hi all
I'm curious to know how the Microtech Gefell mics with the M7 capsule stack up against their revered counterparts from the past.

I've rarely come across a reference to the UM92.1. How does this stack up against the M49 and U47?

Everybody seems to love the M930/940 with the M9 (?) capsule, but the UMT70S with the M7 has a much lower profile, or at least that's the impression I get. I know the MG capsule in itself is very highly regarded, but I suppose the huge difference in electronics makes comparison difficult. Anyway, I'm just a little curious.

Thanks
John Stafford

PS I really like the Peluso U47 -and it's quite cheap compared to some of the other contenders.

I have a MG UMT800 which uses the M7 capsule. The internal electronics, though, are not anything like the older Neumanns, but are similar in some respects to modern Neumann non-tube mics.

The UMT800 is an incredible mic. It's not going anywhere. I've used many of the current MG mics, including the UM92.1 and UMT70s (both of which use the M7 capsule). They're certainly a vibe with the mics using the M7 capsule. There's a slight softness added to the edge of things, and there's a blending of sound into something that is more homogeneous. That's a bit metaphysical, but it's hard to describe.

The MG LD mics using the other capsule, such as the M930, UMT71, etc., are nice too. Of course, when you get into talking about SDs, MG makes some of the best there are.
