Not here much, but would like some opinions from those who know. I'm using an RME Digiface with my laptop and a Tascam TMD-1000. I would like to start using more outboard effect while mixing to stereo. I use Vegas Video to multitrack. Routing in this mixer leaves a bit to wish for. ADAT 3 in/out on the RME is not being used at this time. I was thinking of getting something like the Alesis AI-3 (24bit) to route signal to my outboard gear then use a small mixer like a Mackie 12ch as an aux return and come back to the Tascam mixer using only one stereo input. Sounds like a pain but once it's patched it won't change much. My question is. is the Alesis worth the $399.99 price tag? These things are never on sale, I've been looking for awhile. I've never heard (or even seen in use) any of these converters. Do they sound decent? Any other ideas?

I've got an AI-3 and it was my cheapest option. I don't know if 399 is cheap for you or not. Diferent countries and suppliers etc.
It does behave well when it comes to clock issues and strange noises etc.
Thew basic sound of the unit is as good as any other converter I have. I have many of the Digidesign hardwares except the new HD and have owned many other units including the Korg1212 and Alesis ADAT-XTs and Tascam DATs and multitracks.
They do all sound different.
The AI-3 has a workable sound but I could cal it neutral. It seems to ba a little hyped. I can think of another word to use.
I like it but I have not had to use it all the time and on all recordings. Too much of this sound might be too much.
