Probably going to be getting real recording equipment (more than a mono-input on a $20 soundcard) at some point.
What I'm looking for is something which will allow X inputs (coming from the mixer) to the computer at once. X is at a minimum, 2, and at most, 6, although 4 would be great. Mixer has Main L-R out + 4 Aux/Efx sends, hence 6. Heck, if the inputs were stereo then 1 would be enough (for a main L-R feed) and 2 would be ideal (to get 2 aux feeds). Inputs could be either 1/8" or 1/4" jacks.
I'd prefer it to be a USB-driven external box, only because it would be swappable to a laptop. I don't have a firewire port on the PC so that's not really a solution.
The line in volume on the current soundcard is about -40dB although I use the mic in which has a booster to bring it up to audible levels. Would I need a preamp or do interface-type boxes have them built in?
Any brands/boxes which would be recommended or that spring to mind for providing simultaneous separate inputs?
I don't need anything other than the interface itself, and possibly a pre-amp.

Can't say I know anything about subgroups other than we don't have any.

I intended to link the unamped L+R out to the computer during live performances, or possibly a spare Aux if we had one. If we decide to record properly, I would link up the Aux channels with an instrument (or two) each along with 2 hard panned on the main bus.
I'm only really looking for a way of transferring (up to 6) mixer outputs to a computer, at one time.

If budget is a concern and you only need 2 inputs/outputs (L + R) the Presonus Inspire 1394 is a good option.
You'll need a firewire card for your computer if you don't already have one. Be sure your firewire card has a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset and not any of the other ones, it will save you headaches.
