What you need to find out is whether or not Pro-tools is playing back the recorded midi data OR just allowing you to hear the drum machine while it's playing.

I can't give you specifics because I don't use pro-tools, but here is a general idea of what you need to make happen.

I don't know if you're syncing up the drum machine with pro-tools or not, but I'm not going to get into that as it doesn't really apply to this problem.

I'm guessing, from your post, since you have both a midi and audio track, that you get both an audio track and a midi track recorded into Pro-Tools. Now, if you were to play that back, the audio would play back exactly like it was recorded.

Now lets say that you go into the midi track and move notes around, add some, take some away, whatever. Now when you hit play, you still hear the same old drum track. That is because you are still hearing the audio track that you recorded.

After you edit your midi data, what you need to do is re-record the drums. EXCEPT this time, instead of using the drum beat from the drum machine, you will be using the midi notes from the recorded track.

To do this you need to do a couple of things. First, you need to set up the track in pro-tools so that the midi data is sent out to the drum machine on the proper midi channel. Drums are usually midi channel 10. Then on your drum machine, Check your midi settings and set it to midi channel 10 and also set it to respond to incoming midi data. I can't tell you how to do that. You'll have to read the manual. Also, make sure that no internal drum pattern is going to play from the drum machine. You can select a blank pattern for that.

Now, set up a new track in pro-tools for the new drum beat and set it up so that the output of the drum machine is going to THAT track. Now start recording. If all the midi is hooked up and the sync is set, you should hear the new pattern and be recording it onto the new track. OH, you will probably want to mute the original audio track to avoid confusion.

thats a really good idea. the only thing that is messing me up with that is i need to be able to hear my editing before i finalize it to another track like that. I definitly cant guess that the changes I make are right specially since i wouldnt hear the edited version and let it record to a new audio track which would take the whole length of the song. BUt i think were def. getting somewhere that idea

Since I dont use pro-tools, I don't know if this is possible...but look for some sort of setting that sends a midi signal when using the midi editor. Then if you add a note, you should hear it.

As for previewing...you could always just play back the track without actually recording it and check for errors that way.
