Tascam has a new unit available, it seems to offer quite a lot at a very low price ... which makes me suspect.

Does anyone have any experience with the Tascam FW1884?

Below is a list of features, but I notice one major feature that is missing: latency-free monitoring.

-8 x 100mm motorized touch-sensitive channel faders, one master fader
-Dedicated controls for pan, solo, mute and select functions on each channel; tactile control for four bands of parametric EQ
-8 balanced XLR analog mic/line inputs with high quality mic preamps
-Phantom power and inserts on every channel
-24-bit/96kHz A/D and D/A converters; full 96kHz operation on all
-8 channels of ADAT lightpipe, stereo S/PDIF inputs and outputs.
-8 analog outputs, allowing connection of L/R and 5.1 surround
-4 MIDI inputs, four MIDI outputs
-Word Clock in and out jacks
-Also available: FE-8 (8-channel sidecar) expands FW-1884 with 8 additional channel control strips

Monitoring through software is not a good idea - even at the fastest rates available, there will be a noticeable delay to the musicians. Thats fine for any MIDI seq stuff, but for recording a drum kit with 7 mics and a bass guitar all at once? thats hell!

So does anyone know if the FW1884 features latency free monitoring? At least one mix bus?

Cheers,
