I would like to pan monitoring in the headphones while I am tracking, but there appears to be no way to do this. I can pan once the track is down, but not during tracking. I have tried fiddling with all of the settings I can think of.

Is there no way to pan the signal while tracking in Cubase?

The focusrite Saffire 6 USB does not have any such mix editor. However, armed with your clue that it depends on the hardware, I figured out an imperfect but better than nothing workaround, and that is by de-selecting the mono switch, and then using either the left or right preamp input, depending on what side I want to monitor. It is imperfect because I would have liked to monitor with something other than a hard pan, but it will help.

Can you not pan within Cubase itself? Cubase is one of the DAWs I do not have or have a trial. In all the others I can pan and have it affect the monitoring as long as I am monitoring post "record head" which is called various things in various DAWs. As long as the track itself is mono input it does not affect the recorded pan field at all. If you are monitoring pre-record head then no adjustments in the DAW will matter. Sorry to use the old school tape terms but there are usually monitoring settings somewhere-at least so far in all the DAW's I have. Most of them I have to search the help pdf file fairly extensively as I am only intimately familiar with a couple. I guess as popular as Cubase is I'm going to have to buy a copy.

I have also tried changing all settings within Cubase that I can identify that might have an effect, but none of them change things until playback. The funny thing is, I could have sworn I did this just recently (variable pan while monitoring/tracking) but now I am not so sure, and maybe it was a hard pan via inputs.

Don't know if this will help you...but I always lift an ear cup to monitor myself. If I'm doing voice or an acoustic/electric guitar, I never even try to find a mix in the cans. I just leave the live part out altogether and lift that ear cup. This lets me monitor "in the room", so to speak.

The mix in the cans is panned to my right ear some of the time, usually not even then.

By lifting an ear cup, I mean just sliding it off one ear. The other cup stays in place.

This will definitely work but you will notice the latency as stated. If you can decrease the buffers as much as possible, it won't be so bad.
