What are you using to achieve overall volume?

I've been looking at a lot of pro mastered stuff, and I notice these guys get some serious level without that trademark L2 distortion.
Not that I expect everyone to be forthcoming as this is regarded as secret in some circles, but how are you guys achieving these kind of levels?

Does the compression and multiband comps play a large role in achieving overall volume for you?

EQing the top-end of the frequency spectrum

When checking commercial songs (in 44.1 kHz) with a spectrum analyser, I often see a sharp roll off in frequencies at around 20 kHz or so. Why exactly is this done? In order to make the fact that the frequencies are abrubtly cut off at 22050 Hz inaudible? So is this something I should be reproducing by using a low-pass filter with a sharp Q (I'm using 20504 Hz, Q of 5.79)?

Looking for mastering work

I will be needing some mastering done on several albums very soon, this seems like a place that has many people who really know what they're talking about and doing. My only question is does anyone here have a lot of experience mastering hip hop & r&b music, and if so a couple questions for you. How much do u charge, how do u preffer the songs when they come to u?
