I've got a bit of a dilemma. We're recording our second album right now, and we're in the process of mixing and also search for a mastering enginner.It's hip hop stuff. We've decided to mix the album ourselves since we are indie and our budget is really tight at this point.

I would like to hear some advice from you.

iv just started checking out C4 and was just wondering if anyone had an opinion?

I usually end up between -5.5 and -7.0 is this about average?
where do you usually end up?
does it differ by genre?

I just had a conversation with an executive at Sony during a mastering session in which he said that the record labels were about to embark on a new copy protection scheme that would severly hinder individuals from coping CD's. I don't have much as far as details, but right now it looks like they are going to focus on PC's and not hassle with Macs.

Is the XL version worth purchasing versus the lastest 'regular' version?

Pet Sounds was recorded in mono back in 1966. It was released on a CD in 2001.
On this CD, the first half is the original material in mono, digitally mastered.
The second half is all the same tracks but in stereo.

How were they able to turn mono material into stereo ?

So you get a bunch of songs that actually sound really bad - especially if it's a compilation and there's no one producer for each song...so there's really no one to "look over your shoulder"...how much do you try to be a hero and how much do you just try to stay true to the original, warts and all?
