Lexicon Lxp-1 Unbalanced / Balanced leads

I have just purchased a second hand Laxicon Lxp-1 which is my first external processor. I have a soundcard with 8 ins & 8 outs (balanced).
The Lxp-1 is unbalanced. All inputs/outputs are jack leads

What is the difference in unbalanced & balanced and are there unbalanced/balanced leads, or does this just mean stereo or mono jack leads.

SX2 and M-Audio FW 410. Can i record line in with fx?

Atm i'm using Cubase SX2 and a M-Audio FW 410.
The thing is, i have a roland jd-800 connected to the 410's line input. In SX2's mixer i can put an insert (e.g. compressor) on the line input but it doesn't work. No effect no matter what works. Not even the channel's EQ.
It seems Cubase doesn't do any effect on the line input. Is this correct?

MOTU 896HD vs. . Mackie Onyx 1220 with firewire card

How do those two compare?

I'd like to upgrade my studio to 8 inputs and better A/D converters (currently using a Delta 44). I want decent mic preamps built-in so I can quickly record a whole bunch of tracks.

I was thinking about the PreSonus Firepod but then found those two options which seem better.

MOTU 2408 MK3 OR 24I/O ?

just curious what would be better to buy?, i'm gonna be doing live audio recording with my apple g5 and I'm gonna need at least 24 channels to start, eventually going to 48 channels, also i'll need to sync audio to live video shoots. just curious if anyone could give me any insight on which unit is better for that app, i know the 2804 is a little cheaper, and seems to have more features.

Transition from DIGI002 to HD1/2 or others - opinions please

I am considering a leap from my current DIGI002 Rack to an HD based system. I tend to record full bands which means I frequently use all 18 inputs at the same time on my DIGI002. I have some great mic preamps and A/D-D/A converters and I just hate the idea of using the DIGI002 converters.

I bought an unknown mixer

I bought a mixer for $75 while i was on vacation in Newport, Oregon and i dont know anything about it. Its an 8 channel mixer that looks like it is something that would be used mostly for live shows but it doesnt have the power amps or anything just the normal builtin preamps. It says Richmond Sound Design at the top of it and so i looked it up and found nothing for it.
