How much quality is lost from A/D/A/D

How much quality is lost when going from A/D/A/D? Right now I have all of my outboard gear setup so I compress and EQ going into my DAW and use plugins for mixing and editing but I would like to start using the outboard stuff as inserts into my DAW.

So how do most studios do it? Record clean and insert the outboard gear later, or track with some compression and EQ?

Recording Audios. Questions.

I have to record vocals and instruments. I need a preamp (for mic and instrument) and a compressor. What's the best bang for my buck? I'm trying to be as efficient as possible with my spending while I'm still poor.

Also, my soundcard is a Delta 1010LT, so is it possible to get by without getting a mixer?

Please share your expertise or advice. Thanks.

Question about M-Audio Audiophile USB sound interface...

Ok, this may seem really really dumb, but the usb port on the back of the unit is for connection to your computer. right? so that the sound can be recorded on your computer thru that? or what. I'm getting confused. because...if its an all-in-one sound interface...you dont need another pci sound card with 1/4' i/o to connect it to the audiophile to record sound from whereever right?
