i think i understand what noise floor is but could someone further explain this to me (yes i have searched it but to no avail) and how i can measure it in my studio.
is it basically just recording silence with all equipment on?
jesus i feel like an idiot.

i was recording my synthesizer SY 85 into Apogee trak2 through coaxial digital cable using Sony Sound forge apps.
even though i didn't play SY 85, the noise floor level is changing
why did it happen?

guitar recording and fret noise?
Guys,
I am recording a guitar part with lots of gain and distortion
What is the best way to minimise the noise produced by fingers moving across the fretboard?
I have tried gating, but it doesn't work very well..
any suggestions welcome..
thanks in advance!

Acceptable noise floor?
I'm not sure this is a mastering question, but I'd like some feedback from mastering experts if possible. I'm recording solo acoustic guitar (think Alex de Grassi, or Leo Kottke, or...) in my home studio. I've been doing a lot of work on reducing noise and have made a lot of progress, but I'm curious how much further I need to go.

Strange Noise from Mixer/Microphone
Hi.
I just recently hooked up a mixer a friend gave me, which is in perfect condition and a brand new SM58. I'm running the SM58 directly into the mixer, and the mixer to my computer using two red and white rca cords into a 1/8 inch adaptor which goes into the "In" on my computer.

monitor noises with laptop
hi all
i did a search of the site and it seems like no one else is having this problem, but my laptop's processing is affecting my powered monitors. Everytime the processor thinks, i get a crazy electric buzzing in the monitors.
any ideas how to solve this? Anyone else noticing anything similar?

Adding white noise to a mix
Hi all,
I'm about to undertake a Hard rock album, which is generally not what i do, so its all a bit new to me.
I remember reading somewhere that some engineers add white noise to their mix to enhance the 'Wall of guitars' effect. Is this common practice? if so what should i look out for?
Thanks for any help
Henri
