Straight up explaination on 16 bit as opposed to 24 bit
Found this thread, thought it may help someone,it helped me. http://www.compulink.co.uk/~davedorn/computing/sound/24bit1.htm
24 Bit more about resolution, not dynamics...
While technically it it true that 24bit gives you "more dynamic range", the real benefit is the increased resolution. You have to realize that an audio waveform is constantly passing from positive to negative, very quickly. in these microseconds you get down in the "crevices" near 0 physical amplitude, which is -inf in your DAW.
How to correctly convert a 24bit master to 16bit?
Hi all,
I've been lurking around here a lot, but now have a question of my own. With a recent project, I decided to mixdown to 24bit/44khz, instead of 16bit/44Khz which is what I have done in the past. After mastering the audio, I was puzzled by this sharp harsh sounding noise i'd get when playing back the file and boosting around the 16khz area.
Converting 16-bit to 24-bit
hello
I have some older sessions in 16-bit 44.1 kHz. i am going to re-track the vocals for the sessions using newer equipment which is capable of 24-bit up to 96 kHz.
Is there any benefit to converting the 16-bit audio into 24-bit and work in a new 24-bit session (44.1) for recording vocals?
or should i leave it in 16-bit, and record the vocals at 16-bit depth?

Octopre vs. . Digimax96K
I'm in the market for an 8 channel set of converters with preamps to go into the ADAT on my digi 002. I'm wondering if any of you have have USED BOTH. I know many have used one of them and will tell me that it is the best thing in the world, but I would really prefer to hear from somebody who's played with both. I know I need to get the ADAT card for the octopre, so that's not a problem.

Questions about dithering 16 bit files
I've always been somewhat skeptical on this topic, and I hope someone can inform me of any mistakes I may be making.

The 32bit Float Advantage
Import a music track into a 32bit float engine audio software
Put 2 gainer plugins on the track and lower the first gainer by 143dB
boost the second gainer by 143 dB
Listen, it sounds exactly the same.
And now compare it with the same track phase inverted: silence.

96kHz and 48kHz on two different interfaces simultaneously?
My system (to be):
LynxTwo B into Cubase SX3 for audio recording, and a MOTU 2408 mkII with S/PDIF I/O for outboard effects (Kurzweil Rumour/Mangler).
AD-DA16x firewire 48k-96k
Hello, I was wondering if it is possible to have both an ApogeeDA-16X & AD16X running through the firewire port of a mac @ 96k ?
According to the website & manuals, it can only go to 48k if both are being used? Is that correct ? I'm hoping I'm wrong.
If this is true, is there another way to have BOTH units running via firewire direct into a mac ?
