monitor volume control

hey everyone-

just picked up a pair active monitors, and am looking to build a simple passive volume control for them. Running 1/4" balanced TRS out of my interface into the monitors currently. Don't want to use the software master faders, as I'll lose the all important bit-depth of my digital audio when I have the fader dialed down...

I record using Sony sound forge on my laptop. At the moment I'm using a Behringer ultravoice mic pluged into the input of my ultragain pro then the output is going straight into my laptop mic in.
Im pretty sure that is wrong and the mic should be the output but i dont seem to have any way of doing that with the leads i have.

Problem w/ volume and quality with Saffire Pro 24 and e835 mic

I am setting up my first home studio for doing some personal singer/songwriter hobby-oriented stuff and recently received my first audio interface and serious mic in the mail. I'm having trouble and am trying to determine whether something is defective, so I can return it in time, or if the poor quality is just the way it is.

Question about drum volume

I have Superior Drummer. Is is best to make all drums and cymbals exactly the same volume, or is there a formula for standard drum volume?

After posting some of my songs, people tell em that the kick is too loud, a crash is too loud, hats are too low, etc.

Should I set my drum levels to a certain standard volume, then tweak the volumes on final mixdown?

Metalcore guitar recording volume levels? please help!

thank you for checking this threat out

I have a metalcore band and I'm a bit doubtful about the guitar volume levels and their distribution when recording metal...

The thing is one person said one guitar has to have a higher volume than the other guitar when doing rhytm, i.e. when both guitars are playing the same riff, so the sound doesnt get distorted...
