Thanks for sure ! I have been actively collecting stuff since 2
Thanks for sure !
I have been actively collecting stuff since 2000 when there was a big push toward digital recording and people were dumping their analog stuff
the CBS compressor R2Z Link is working on I got off eBay back then. It had been badly abused it is now apparent
I mothball racked it ever since without knowing anyone that could take it under wing and present a worthy studio piece
that’s where Link has saved the day
He’s one amazing engineer and super gent
And now however it’s looking like with Link’s special talents it might get some action soon ;0)
my thinking then was that much of what people were dumping would remain desirable over the years to come. UREI gear always caught my attention.
And I believe this stuff is no different than a musical instrument having discrete unique voicing and colour that may not be entirely replicated by digital mapping. No two similar model boxes ever sounding exactly the same ... like two off the rack guitars ... same model, style, colour, etc ... but often large differences in the way they play and sound
for me Analog gear falls in the same category as say a rail car that has existed for decades if not centuries ... it’s design and functionality has yet to be changed or improved because it is the ultimate master form of sound enhancement tooling
like a humbucking pickup
Minimal variations but no true change
again an ultimate master form in my estimation
and when I read that the Beatles and other great acts recorded typically with 8 tracks max using largely tube based electronics and when selling millions upon millions and still sounding unmatched for all dimensions
I thought hmmm ... better grab other people’s cast away gear while it remains unpopular
now
I can say truly that for me it was the best approach possible and it all sings well together ... an analog choir of kind really
and it’s immediately at your fingertips when mastering
a tweak here and there on the fly is the fun
once you get used to it all ... it’s like playing another musical instrument really ... sweet like a piano to the touch and powerful like the wizard of Oz’s gear in results
It’s about learning how to combine pieces of gear together in a flow path that provides the easel, canvas, colours of paint, brushes, the mood ... texture, etc
And it’s all at your immediate fingertips ;0)
