I have a MOTU 8pre interface. I'd like to use pro-tools and I'd like to have some extra channels to record my drums.

Could I get a Digidesign interface and chain the two and use PT?

Or is DigiDesign like i think they are and prevent all that?

Yes, you can accomplish that provided your secondary device has the ADAT light pipe standard. And your Digi design device also has optical ports. So you'll get eight on the 002 and an additional eight with your MOTU device provided you have the light pipe ports available?

You'll have to tell the Digi design device to clock itself from the external light pipe input source so that everything is timed the same. Otherwise you get nothing or horrendous screeching.

Oh yeah 16 baby!

No, the 8pre can be set to act as a digitizing preamplifier and route its outputs down the ADAT lightpipe. So if you really want to go the PT route (and think HARD before you make that decision), get the 003 series interface and PTLE and use the lightpipe input for the 8pre. You may be able to pick up the older 002 series second-hand for less money, but check the PT licence carefully before you part with cash.

As Remy says, set the clock source in PT to be ADAT, and you're away.
