I just read on another post where someone said The Brick is basically a Vipre just on one setting. Now I doubt this is true but I have been reading where people say it makes a great tube mic preamp. I've been wanting to get a good tube pre and was just wondering how this would compare to say a UA 610 or single channel Manley? Thankx

I own "The Brick" and I am so far happy with it after about 6 months but I don't have anything to compare it to as this is my first pre-amp, but I do not think it compares to the Vipre, as when I bought mine at Guitar Center with the Groove Tubes GT55 mic for $499 total, the Vipre is like $2500, so, I would find it hard to believe it can be the same or close even on 1 setting, but it may share some of the characteristics of 1 of the settings. All the people that have heard my recordings through the "Brick" liked and were impressed with the color it gave to my Vocals which I also liked. They didn't think it was me singing, so in no way is this a really clean pre. Although I've never heard the Vipre in action, I've heard it is completely amazing. Groove Tubes describes the "Brick" as the Vipre's little brother, whatever that means?
For acoustic and electric guitar, I am not convinced "The Brick" is my answer although it definitely can do the job. I am looking for a higher end pre, dual channel for recording of Acoustic and Electric Guitar, currently thinking about the Avalon AD2022 and Great River MP2NV. I will still use the "Brick" for Vocals though I think. I have seen many people desribe the "Brick" as the SM57 of Mic Pres though which has made me feel like a made a solid purchase.

Don't know if anybody else around here has one, so I thought I'd reply because I do. I'm afraid I can't compare it to a Manly or the UA, but I think it is pretty good. Those who say that no preamp under $1000 is substanially better than any run of the mill mackie/beri preamp might want to give it a try. I think the sound is plenty clear, warm, and non-thin. Not too much on the bells and whistles, though. I believe that Fletcher guy (Mercenary Audio) doesn't hate it, but you would have to ask him for his specific opinion. If you are curious I would get one from him to try. I don't think you would regret buying it, but I also don't think it will totally knock your socks off or write better songs for you. Makes me feel a little naked not having some sort of meter or clip indicator, though. Also, I think they only rate the gain at about +55 so I find I have to crank it a bit on a lot of stuff. Overall: 8-)
