A local music shop was closing down and i went into to see if I could buy a small mixer for my bedroom studio.
The owner told me he had sold the last mixer, but then a salesman said he did have a Yamaha MG24/14FX mixer in the storeroom that a church had ordered and never collected.
The owner said that I could buy the Yamaha MG24/14FX really cheap as he needed to sell all the stock as soon as possible.
So I managed to get the mixer really cheap and also get some cables thrown in for free, so I just need a little advice from you guys please.
I use my computer to make different types of music and use a Delta 1010 soundcard and a pair of Mackie HR824 monitors.
Output one and two of the Delta soundcard go to the Mackie Hr824s for monitoring.
In the Delta’s control panel there is a patchbay router and I set the wav out 1/ 2 to go to the monitors but when I did that the music was so dam loud i quickly turned the monitors off to save my ears and equipment.
A friend then told me to change the setting to wav out 1/ 2 and tick monitor mixer so I could adjust the volume level.
That worked and now I can adjust the volume so I don’t go deaf, but even with the volume settings on their lowest on the other setting it still came out loud.
When I used the Delta with just my computer I just used output 1/2 in my music software, but with having my mixer I will be able to use all 8 output channels and input channels.
I want to be able to send the outputs of the Delta into my mixer inputs and then back into my soundcard after I’ve done what I have too.
I need to know how to set it all up as the manual that comes with the mixer isn’t any good and doesn’t tell you how to set it up with your soundcard.
In my software I can send my different instruments to the mixer and back into my soundcard, but I don’t know how to do it.
I will be recording keyboards and mics after I work out how to set up the mixer; it’s a little scary as I’ve never done anything like this before.
I don’t like to bother anyone if I can help it, I know the outputs of the soundcard go to the inputs of the mixer but I don’t know how to get the outputs of the mixer back into the soundcard.
I also know you can group instruments like drums to cut down on channels and have bass and keyboard vocals on their own channels but I’m stumped after that.
Any help would be appreciated and would help me onto my music making again, I really like the mixer as it has 24 channels and as my studio grows the mixer will be able to handle it.

A control room needs a physical patch bay for signal routing and patching. A console usually has 2 outputs reserved for "control room monitors" which means speakers. You would not go out and purchase a Ferrari without knowing how to drive and you would not use it to drive to and from the 7-11 for beer. Well maybe??
You connect your sound card to the console like a multitrack tape recorder would be connected. You do not use the sound card output to feed the speakers directly! You use the console to feed the speakers, that's why you purchased the console! Why don't you just go out and purchase the Hope Diamond? It would look great in your toilet tank. And when your sound card is connected to the console, precautions must be taken so as not to feed the sound card back to itself which would cause horrendous feedback. So you have no idea what signal routing is all about. Be careful! People could get killed in your studio if they don't know that you replaced your goldfish with a turtle.
