Yes I know I need nearfield monitors. So I am thinking Msp5a's from Yamaha. I have spent soo much money over the last few months on preamps, comps, mics and a new recorder. It is SOOO depressing when I put my mix on any speaker besides the stupid BOSE wave freakin radio It sounds like it was recorded through a 1 inch layer of mud! AGHHH. (y)
So seriously folks what do ya think of the Yamaha's? Yea or Neah.

I like mine and can recommend them. They are ruthless in showing bad mixes in the mid and top frequencys. Not much of that really low bass though, so you can still get a few surprises there. Not very "pleasing" to listen too, can be a bit tiring, but it if it is the result you are after they are good tools to get there. Good build quality, mine has taken quite a bit of abuse.

Suggestions

J-MADD wrote: Any other comments or suggestions?? As far as a budget, I would be willing to spend up to 2k on monitors. And kind of a side note to stick on this question: is there a difference in monitors used for tracking/mixing and mastering?

Genelec 1030A......you'll be a happy camper...there are larger models but these little guys will work great in a small control room. I find them accurate and musical....a great combo that. We do alot of live trackingmixing/mastering of everything from jazz trios to 20 piece pipe and drum corps and big bands and everything in between.....what goes in...comes out.

I do recommend the MSP5's. When i was looking for monitors, I narrowed it down to the Yamahas and to Dynaudio BM6's. I chose MSP5's solely on the great value of these speakers, they had great reviews and they're only 500$. If you have money to spend, maybe you should go with the BM6's. Also, Im not in a position to try out monitors but If you can go to your local retailer, that's probably the first thing you should do, and listen to the monitors they have there.
