Do I need pro mastering for my situation?
I have been recording music digitally since 1997. I can come with a pretty good finished product. I play rock and also write other pop ballads etc.
I amwriting to sell these songs. I master myself which sounds decent but not like they could sound. Is it worth iot for me to spend a few hundred on mastering?

Mastering poorly mixed tracks
I was wondering what techniques people might have to opening up a track that has been poorly mixed (everything is dead center)and has no stereo image)during the mastering process. I do have the vocal tracks because i recorded them myself so any techniques for mixing vocals to create a wide stereo image of the vocals would be helpful.
Thank you for your time,
JP

Can I borrow your ears?
I'd like a mastering engineer to listen to some samples of my recordings to critique before I annoy a local mastering engineer with my tracks. These samples are older, and I now get better quality and better mixes. I just want someone to tell me if mastering can cure some of my recordings' ills.

Mastering techniques for combatting distant miking
This is my first post, so go easy on me.
First off, I realize now after reading the 1st five pages of the mastering forum that I am nowhere (and won't soon be) near a proper mastering setup and for that matter I am questioning the foundation with which I have built this studio up to be (another thread), but all this is not the point.
What is your approach at mastering?
How do you usually start off, are you they type that likes to listen to the song a whole bunch of times before you go at it, or are you much wilder and attack the song right away... also what do you think you can do to improve your own tactics?

Best or Worst Mastered Albums?
Besides the albums mentioned on Bob Katz's site (http://www.digido.com) what are some really well done or really BADLY done albums that people are listening to or staying away from for the total content including mastering? I know for example that the Red Hot Chili Peppers album "Californication" is probably the loudest CD ever done.
