Mic Upgrade - $200ish
Like many other new recording enthusiasts I purchased the MXL 990/991 kit and have been using it for the past several years. However, I'm ready to upgrade (I've been ready) but with all the mics out there it's hard to make a decision knowing that there is a wealth of knowledge here that could lend a hand (or ear rather).

Confused by microphone cables...
I've got a Behringer XM8500 mic that I'm using to record straight in to my PC's standard mic input. I bought a balanced mic cable with it just so that in future if I changed to a balanced system I'd have the right cable (my soundcard's input is not balanced).

Looking for a ~$150 (around or less) cond. mic as an upgrade
Hi everyone! I'm looking to buy a new condenser mic as an upgrade to my current system. I'm currently using a MXL 990 condensor mic with a PreSonus Firebox preamp. The mic will be mainly used on me with an emphasis in recording vocals in a small home studio (aka budget studio).
compression settings for overhead mics
just wondering what the general view is on compressing the overhead drum mics during tracking. Necessary?,Stupid?,Imperative?
I realize that its mostly a matter of opinion and taste, but if anybody has any input or suggested threshold/ratio-attack/release settings theyd like to share id dig it very much.

My drum mic setup
I was hoping to rob some of you of your hard work and experimentation. I have an M-Audio Large Diaphram, Blue Bluebird, AkG perception 150 cardoid, Shure cardiod, and an sm58A Beta. I have a sure m-268 4 channel mixer and an Mbox2 which will allow me to use all 5 mics. What would be a solid arrangement to at least start tracking with (i.e.

Is compression necessary with good dynamics?
So if a vocalist has good control over his or her dynamics is compression necessary?
If you increase the gain slightly and pull the vocalist a little bit back from the mic can you dispose of the pop filter?
If a tree falls in the woods... nevermind.
