Mixing, Mastering

Those of you that do your recordings on your DAW, do you just mix on on it and then send it to someone to master? Or how do you produce a CD quality sound?

I have a few recordings, but they don't have a consistent volume level for playing back on different electronics. Also the levels are not high enough when doing playback in something like Winamp.

Any help?

CD Copy protection - is there some software for this?

A client told me that the duplication plant told her there is some software that mastering engineers can install on a CD master that prevents it from being copied unless you have the key/password to unlock it. I've never heard of such a thing. Did I miss something?

Does anyone know what they might be talking about?
