early 90's digital editing

does anyone know what kind of digital editing techniques were available in the early 90's the time of nirvana, pearl jam, AIC, soundgarden, RATM, tool, korn, green day, STP, etc., did they do most of their editing back then on tape? would the digital interface they used have been the Alesis HD24 or something similar? i believe this was a time before pro tools was really around correct?

questions on firewire interface

hello, i am a musician, but new to recording work. i wish to do a professional quality recording in the most affordable way. so i prefer to buy a firewire interface rather than a usb interface. a Yamaha personal firewire interface GO46 has caught my attention. it has two firewire ports, both are 6-pin type. however, my dell laptop has only one 1394 firewire port, it is a 4-pin firewire port.

Your input on the SM57 performance curve

Ok, since I'm an upfront kind of guy here it is: the SM57 is a practical, handy, inexpensive mic for multi-purpose studio use. Perhaps an industry standard. What's the next step up in practical, handy, but a little more expensive, mics? Those of you who don't like long posts can stop here and reply.

2 channels of AD/DA: Rosetta 200 or RME ADI-2?

i'm in the process of shopping for an external converter. My budget is under $2000. (lavrys are too expensive for me right now, myteks - i don't want to run into customer service type of issues if ever i have problems in the future) so my choice kinda boiled down to either rosetta 200 or RME ADI-2. rosetta is $1800 whereas RME ADI2 is $700.

The nuts and bolts of a studio

Hi, I am looking to start a semi-professional studio. I already have an Otari Status 18r 24 track recording console with patchbay, an Alesis HD24 multitrack, Event tr8 active monitors, a 16 channel XLR snake with 4 TRS returns for headphones, headphones, a headphone amp, 3 D-25 to 1/4" TRS snakes for connection from the multitrack to the console, a power conditioner, a rack, and rack screws.
