Newbie...Getting feedback out of monitors

Hello, just got my first recording setup. My equip is a RODE NT1A, M-Audio DMP3, a Roland VS-880, M-audio powered monitors. The whole set up is in one room. I get a lot of feedback on both vocals and mic'd acoustic guitar. I am barely able to turn the gain up past 9am on the DMP3 and the same goes for the input sensitivity to the VS-880 channel.

Monitors: Necessary for mixing, or just mastering?

Hello,

Up until now I have only been mixing using headphones.

Are monitors necessary for mixing, or just mastering?

I'm going to be sending my tracks to be properly mastered.

If you do recommend monitors for mixing, which ones should I get? I don't want to spend a fortune on them, and the room I'll be mixing in won't be acoustically treated.

Monitors Underneath the Stage

Our church has a small stage - so small that floor wedges are impossible in practical terms. We don't have the budget for IEM's, and I don't like the sight of "hot spot" monitors mounted on mic stands. What I've been thinking about is placing the monitors underneath the stage. Would that be a possibility I should even think about, or do I need to just throw the idea away?
