I need to find some way to switch between my powered speakers and a small portable CD player that has a line input that allows it to be used for my headphones when I am recording with a mic and can't use the speakers in my small room.

It's really bogging me down swapping cables.

What do you suggest for switching between sources?

I'm currently using a couple of tiny and cheap desktop speakers to mix and I recognize I'll need something with power to pick up on subtleties in the sound, so if anyone could recommend something in the $100-200 range or just laugh at me because you can't get anything worthwhile at that price I'd appreciate it, thanks.

For normal recreational listening, are there any advantages/disadvantages to listening through speakers versus monitors.

From what I understand normal stereo speakers color the sound in pleasurable ways, to make the sound more warm and fuzzy. Also, aren't monitors are designed to provide clarity, even sounds across the spectrum?

I greatly prefer the sound of 16 ohm loads over 8 ohms.

I was thinking I would get a 2x12 and use two 8 ohm V30s in series. But how would the sound compare to using a 1x12 with 1x16 ohm V30?

I want to design and build a cab for an Eminence Patriot 12" speaker, and I already have the internal dimensions plotted out.

If I design a 1x12 cab, will it sound thin or lackluster compared to a 2x12? Also, how hard is it to get good tone from a home-built design? I understand some acoustics and definitely understand the wood construction techniques.
