How do you guys feel about using tube mics into tube preamps? Is this just "too much tube"?

I'm assuming all my favorite, character-drenched recordings from the 70's used this chain (and then some - tube eq's, tube compression, etc.).

Just trying to see if I have this correct:

If a mic has 130db max spl handling and you plug this into a mic preamp input that only has 86db of dynamic range and recorded something above 86db it would clip the input?

Hey everyone, Just curious to know what mic stands you all like to use. I'm looking for a stand that could be used in studio or live, but mostly in studio. I've been told that if you use tripod stands and one leg breaks, your screwed, so use the circular base, but not sure if thats really an issue... What do you think?

OK, I'm going to be shooting in a warehouse type location and I get a lot of echo. I'm going to use some blankets to fix some of the echo I have been getting. I have been using a shotgun (Cheap) mic but the sound has been really bad. My subjects cannot use lav mics because they are training martial arts.

Does any one knows what microphone does John Mayer use for his vocals.. I am recording a kid that has a very similar voice but I dont quiet get the same sound...

the RODE nt1a sounds pretty good, and is just right for my price range ($2-300), but i would prefer something with a... warmer (?)... sound, a deeper sound perhaps. the RODE is a bit too bright for my purposes?
