Two mic's on a Hi-hat technique
Forums
I am having trouble finding any information on this. The last time I tracked a band the engineer set up a 57 on the Hi Hat. Taped to the side of the 57 was a 451. The two mic were then bused to one track. I had never seen this technique before but it sounded amazing.

Good 1st Large Diaphragm Mic
Forums
Looking into getting a nice large diaphragm condenser mic. I currently possess a pair of AKG 451's, some 57's/58's, and an assortment of Audix D mics (1's, 2's, and a 4). Will be using this setup with a home DAW setup. Recording rock/blues/typical crap.

Mic suggestions for acoustic instruments
Forums
I'm recording Banjo and Mandolin. Anyone here got experience recording these instruments? I'm not happy with the sound I get from my existing mics (AKG 3000C and an SM57). The space I'm recording in doesn't have a particularly nice sound, so I think I'm looking for something fairly directional. And it will have to be under 200 US$/ 160 GB£.
Thanks, Jim.

RODE NT5 Sample / Drum Overheads
Forums
OK folks, I've had a more extensive session with the NT5's today on my drum kit. The MP3 I've posted is a fairly accurate representation of the overall sound.
This MP3 is typical X/Y pattern, about 16" over my head.

Dynamic Perspective
Forums
:) Hey folks! Since you have a limit to the dynamic range of digital recording, and wanted to stay somewhat true to power and the relationship of various instruments and orchestra, same for POP and R&B etc. ...
how would you plot out the dynamic curve using a level of 50 to 55db spl as a reference?

Multiple vocal Micing - live recording
Forums
Please give some suggestions to this scenario:
(This is an on-going weekly effort):
I am recording a live jazz orchestra for delayed radio broadcast (and, later, cable TV & web). For now, this is being recorded straight to DAT - mixed on the fly. No o-dubbing, post mix work, etc.

My mic and boxiness--Advice?
Forums
Hey all-
I recently got a BLUE Baby Bottle, and for the life of me, the only thing I can do to get it to sound un-boxy is to start screwing around with the midrange either on my joemeek VC1Qcs (mic preamp/comp/EQ) or after tracking. I feel the boxiness leaving it when I'm cutting about 3-6dB anywhere between 1.6k and 2.2k, and that just doesn't seem right to me.
