A/D Converter/Mackie ONYX Questions

I am looking to get a better A/D interface; I currently have the M-Audio OMNI Rack. I would really like to get the Apogee AD-16X! What are some converters that are a notch below the Apogee converters-MOTU, RME, etc? I have gotten suggestions to check out the RME stuff because of the quality to price factor of their products.

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TWO MONITORS IN THE SETUP

Just interested to know how yours works.

I have a Hercules Prophet With RADEN 7500 chipset (i think). It has 1 VGA monitor slot and a DVI-I one (which i have a VGA converter on) = 2 VGA 17" monitors. My 1st monitor is at 1152 x 864 and the 2nd 1024x768. The 2nd monitor however has always been a little fuzzier/hazier than the 1st. The software i had bundled was Hydra Vision.

01v & MOTU 828 mkii or Tascam FW-1884

In the near future I will be upgrading some of my daw hardware to add more inputs and a dedicated control surface so, I can stop mixing with a mouse and move up to some better and more reliable gear. I think that I have narrowed this down to, 2 possible solutions and would like to get a second opinion from you guys.

Compressors/EQ Before or after it's been recorded ?

Hi Guys, ok here's the deal. I already ordered some high quality mic preamps and external analog compressors. I wanted to know if you pros out there add the analog compressors and eq while recording straight into your DAW ? or Do you record the siganl clean then add the compressors later ?
