Firewire 400/800

Just wondering between Firewire 400 and 800 what most people have connected and currently using and any specific conclusion or opinions on either.
Also like to know if you use your onboard FW connector or if you use a separate PCI or PCIe card slot FW port.
And lastly does anyone know a way to test the speed or determine the speed of the FW connection.
