Current mastering formats and mastering software questions

So 16 bit DAT is all over. Recently I've been running my mixes onto 2 tracks on my RADAR and transfering them to computer to top and tail them before handing them to the client as 24 bit WAV files. Mastering engineers seem to be happy with that. Is that the best current format?

Software Suggestions?

I have a stand alone unit and i am planning to upgrade to computer recording. Ive read that the first step is to figure out which software your going to associate yourself with. Now price is a bit of an issue, but if its nessacary than i can manage. What are your guys' suggestions?. By the way I'm leaning towards PC because i dont own a Mac and havent used one since like 4th grade. Thanks.

Could software plugins take over hardware gear?

Looking at all the growth in the effects plugins in the last 2 years, some of them are better than the hardware effects units, I was wondering if software compressors would meet with the quality of hardware compressors anytime soon. Do you think it's possible? If not, please tell me why.
