I'm recording thru a Mackie desk 8-track to DAW.
All I want is the pres.
I've got 2 choices, connecting the Direct Out to my converters, which is post-channel (trim, lowcut, fader, EQ), but gives me a balanced out.
Or the insert point, by inserting to the frist click, this is post-trim, pre everything else and therefore probably cleaner, but is gonna have to be unbalanced.
Which is the better choice?

Its worth about the same as the VLZ and the pre's are meant to be nicer, plus it means I can sell my firewire soundcard as the Firewire out will give me my 8-channel DAW transfer, whether this comes pre or post channel strip I don't know.
As all of this is a shortcut until I can put in a TMP8 and some kind of firewire interface, after which I don't need a desk really. However a desk does impress potential clients on studio visits.....

For tracking with a Mackie, I'd prefer to take the pre's from the inserts. The preamps are pretty good, and without going through all the other schmutz like EQ, etc, will only keep your signal truer.
I'm a short-signal-path guy, though, YMMV. IMHO, you really don't need EQ when tracking, since you can move the mic.

I use the direct outs. For at least the fact that they are balanced. I usally hear a little less noise (at least on my gear) with the balanced connection. Just set the EQ at center detent (12 o'clock). To bad the older Mackie boards didn't have the "true hardware" EQ bypass that the new ONYX boards have.
